Giuseppe Verdi
Opera
Premiere 7. 5. 2015
This powerful music drama set in ancient Egypt is above all a story of love between the Egyptian military commander Radamès and an Ethiopian slave. This situation poses the “eternal” question: does love take priority over duty to one’s country? The idea for the opera came from a novella by the French Egyptologist Auguste Mariette. It gave Verdi an unusual theme that he elevated, by means of music, to a timeless story of love, whose fulfilment is hindered by the hostility of their nations.
